In 2011, the RRTC was awarded supplement funds to search for data sources and research literature for people aging “into” and “with” a physical disability. There are 8 searches we’re conducting:

  1. Search for federal and state data sources (previous studies, etc.) where data was collected to identify people aging with a physical disability (Mark Jensen, Katherine Schomer).
  2. Search the research literature for the types, frequency, timing of onset, and severity of secondary health conditions in persons aging with and into disability. A search and review paper will be done for each of these conditions:
    • Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) (Mark Jensen)
    • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) (Kathryn Yorkston, Carolyn Baylor)
    • Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) (Kathryn Yorkston, Carolyn Baylor)
    • Muscular Dystrophy (MD) (Dagmar Amtmann)
    • Osteoarthritis (OA) (Ivan Molton)
    • Stroke (Kathryn Yorkston, Carolyn Baylor)
  3. Search the research literature for interventions that have been or could be used for increasing the health & wellness and community participation of individuals aging with or into disability (Aimee Verrall, Dawn Ehde, Anjali Truitt, Samantha Artherholt, Mark Jensen).
